Myopia – A Silent Pandemic
The global prevalence of myopia is 2.5 billion. It is more in Asia, where approximately 90% of adults tend to be myopic. Several factors influence the progression of myopia. There are environmental factors — from the ubiquity of screens and the lack of natural light to studying for long periods of time and engaging in near work. And these factors combine with genetic factors; a child is twice as likely to be nearsighted if he or she has one parent who is nearsighted and three to eight times more likely if both parents are nearsighted. Furthermore, myopia brings with it an increased risk for glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal detachment. Measures that can be implemented to put the brakes on childhood myopia include preventive actions, such as prohibiting children from using screens, promoting outdoor activities, reducing the amount of time spent on near-vision work, and establishing early bedtimes. There are also actions that can be taken to slow the progression of myopia, such as using defocus incorporated multiple segments spectacle lenses, and the use of one drop a day of micro-dosed atropine.Apart from these, regular screening of children for early detection of myopia and follow-up thereafter to detect the other changes of myopia in the eye is useful
The Essilor Stellest lenses slow myopia progression by about 67%, when worn for 12 hours/day
Amblyopia or lazy eye is when one eye sees less, despite using spectacles. This is seen in children with delayed correction of their refractive error.
Squinting of the eyes or Crossing of the eyes is seen in children, either due to a high
plus power or due to misaligned eyes from birth. This can affect their eye sight.
Stereopsis or 3-dimensional vision refers to depth perception or the ability to see
things in perspective. This can also be ORTHOPTEK affected with amblyopia, squint or errors.
A new treatment modality – ORTHOPTEK that address the above issues has recently
been started at Darshan Eye Care – to help children with the above problems.
The machine exercises the parts of the brain responsible for the development of vision, eye alignment and 3-D vision, and this stimulation helps improve these issues.
