Cataract surgery is today performed using a SUTURELESS APPROACH – termed PHACOEMULSIFICATION. It allows early visual rehabilitation for the patient.

However, it requires the use of sophisticated instrumentation and has a long learning curve. Dr Srinivas K Rao routinely performs this procedure in all types of cataracts.

In order to promote the spread of safe cataract surgery in rural China, he along with Dr Dennis Lam devised a new approach for SUTURELESS SURGERY without need for costly instruments.

The procedure was named SUTURELESS LARGE INCISION MANUAL CATARACT EXTRACTION or SLIMCE and is now performed in many centers in rural China.

A video film of this procedure was presented at the recent meeting of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and was awarded the BEST VIDEO AWARD.
