A pterygium is a very common condition in Indian conditions – it consists of an overgrowth of the conjunctiva onto the cornea. If untreated it can result in poor vision for the patient. The current gold standard procedure for the condition is excision and conjunctival autografting, with the NEW SUTURELESS approach using FIBRIN GLUE.
Dr Rao was one of the first in India to perform this technique in 1993 and his reports on the same in the Indian J of Ophthalmology, and Ophthalmic Surgery have one of the highest success rates described with this surgery. He performed the procedure for a patient with advanced pterygium during his recent visit to Kolkata.
