The ocular surface is a complex structure that comprises of the lids, the epithelium of the cornea and conjunctiva and the tear film. It is increasing lybeing recognized that multiple factors can affect this functional unit, resulting inavariety of distressing symptoms for the patient.
At a recent meeting focus group in Kuala Lumpur, in which Dr Rao represented India, the important roles of hyperosmolarity of the tear film and ocular surface inflammation in the pathogenesis of dry eye were discussed.
Scientific Deliberations
The session was attended by over 75 doctors and postgraduates. The topics discussed were
– Dry eye in post menopausal women
– Cataract surgery and tear problems
– Glaucoma and dry eye
Dr Srinivas K Rao spoke on “Optimizing Tear Film Function in Special Situations” and answered questions on the management of tear problems and ocular surface disorders in various diseases. The talks were well received and the audience felt that the discussions were useful.
