DARSHAN EYE CLINIC – ACTIVITY REPORT – FEBRUARY 2010
Dr Rao visited Mumbai on Sunday to first – deliver a lecture on Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty – how to perform the surgery and obtain optimal outcomes in patients with complicated eye diseases.
He was also the Chief Speaker at a Symposium on Dry Eye Disorders – organized for about 100 ophthalmologists from Mumbai and its neighboring places – where he spoke on the Diagnosis , Medical and Surgical Management of Dry eye and also on the nuances and caveats of safe and successful pterygium surgery. The talks were well appreciated by the audience.
Lamellar Corneal Surgery is a recent advance. In this surgery, only the affected anterior portions of the cornea are removed and replaced selectively. This allows the patients endothelium to be retained and increases the long-term safety of the surgery – since immunological rejection of the graft is no longer possible.
Dr Rao spoke about the use of the Big Bubble technique of lamellar surgery at a meeting of Corneal Surgeons in Mumbai. He shared with them tips and tricks to perform the procedure in a safe, effective and reproducible manner and introduced to them his innovation that allows safe completion of the surgery – in all patients.
