Corneal blindness is an important problem in the Asian context and many of the complex disorders are not suitable for routine corneal transplantation. In such cases, an artificial cornea is required – an approach termed Keratoprosthesis. Dr Srinivas K Rao is a pioneer in this technique and was the first to perform the Osteo Odonto Keratoprosthesis (tooth in eye) procedure in India in 2003. Darshan is one of the two Centre’s in India currently performing this procedure. He also performs the Boston Keratoprosthesis. Recognising his expertise in this field, he was invited to be a founding member of the Asia-Pacific KPro Study Group, at the recently concluded APAO meeting in Bangkok.
