With dry eye disease cases on the rise, make note of the symptoms, treatment options and preventive measures that can be undertaken to tackle it and safeguard vision
As we become increasingly dependent on gadgets and technology, many eye conditions are emerging, one of which is dry eye disease (DED), a condition that can lead to lasting discomfort and impact the vision of millions of people across all age groups.
DED awareness month is observed in July each year to draw attention to this health concern, which is quickly becoming a silent epidemic in India. As per reports, dry eye condition affects around 18.4% to 54.3% of Indians. This is largely attributed to the increased use of digital devices whether for work, studies, or recreation.
WHAT CAUSES IT?
This disease occurs when the eyes don’t produce enough tears or when they evaporate too quickly. Simultaneously, prolonged screen exposure drastically reduces the frequency of blinking, which disrupts the natural lubrication process of the eyes. This results in symptoms like burning, redness, irritation, a gritty feeling, or even blurred vision. Besides excessive screen time, air pollution, dry or air-conditioned environments, diabetes, and certain medications like antihistamines can also cause it. Additionally, individuals over the age of 40 are especially at risk.
TREATMENT AND CARE
DED cases are rising, and could lead to chronic discom- fort and affect vision, productivity and overall quality of life, if left untreated. Unfortunately, due to a lack of awareness, many people end up ignoring the early signs, assuming it’s just momentary tiredness or stress.
Recognising the symptoms early and seeking timely care are crucial steps to address it. Lifestyle adjustments and targeted medical therapies are some of the effective treatment options that can be considered. Make sure to take regular breaks, follow the 20-20-20 rule, and get your eyes regularly examined by an ophthalmologist. This July, take a step toward eye wellness because clear, comfortable vision is worth preserving.
