We’ve all heard of insulin in the treatment of diabetes. Evidence based research has now allowed for its novel application in the treatment of persistent corneal epithelial defects. The ability of insulin to up regulate insulin like growth factors to promote epithelial healing is the rationale behind its use in the treatment of certain corneal conditions. Owing to its off label use, the drug is prepared by diluting and reconstituting with artificial tear drops. Though promising, its long term benefit, efficacy and safety is yet to be evaluated through scientific validation.
