DARSHAN EYE CLINIC – ACTIVITY REPORT – NOVEMBER 2009

Dr Srinivas K Rao invited to Lecture to the Nellore Ophthalmic Society

Keratoconus is a problem of young adults – with an abnormality in corneal shape. Until recently, the only solution was Corneal Transplantation.

RECENT ADVANCES

Current techniques for the management of this condition include – the use of COLLAGEN CROSS- LINKING for stiffening the cornea and preventing cone progression, and the use of special ROSE K contact lenses to allow per fect vision in KERATOCONUS. DALK – lamellar corneal surgery is also safer and more effective.

KERATOCONUS results in an abnormal corneal shape and poor vision for the patient.

Scientific Deliberations

The session was attended by over 100 doctors and postgraduates. The topics discussed were

  • Keratoconus and the Recent advances in management
  • Optimizing tear film function in difficult situations

Dr Srinivas K Rao spoke on these two topics and both were well received.

The audience interaction indicated the need for such talks on improving the understanding of the ocular surface and the newer approaches to the management of keratoconus.
