DARSHAN EYE CLINIC – ACTIVITY REPORT – MARCH 2010

Management of Difficult Corneal Problems – in Kolkatta.

Dr Srinivas K Rao is the Head of the Cor nea Service at Sunetra Family Eye Care Center in Kolkata. The Center provides specialized corneal care to patients in the North- Eastern parts of India, in the conducted by Dr Srinivas K Rao, 1 year ago.

Dr Rao travels to Kolkata for a weekend every 2 months to see patients with complex corneal problems, perform surgery for those who require the s ame and conducts teaching sessions for the postgraduats and Corneal specialists in the region – on Corneal, Cataract, and LASIK related issues – to help develop these areas in the region.

A PTERYGIUM extends onto the cornea and can result in poor vision for the patient.

A pterygium is a very common condition in Indian conditions – it consists of an overgrowth of the conjunctiva onto the cornea. If untreated it can result in poor vision for the patient. The current gold standard procedure for the condition is excision and conjunctival autografting, with the NEW SUTURELESS approach using FIBRIN GLUE.

Dr Rao was one of the first in India to perform this technique in 1993 and his reports on the same in the Indian J of Ophthalmology, and Ophthalmic Surgery have one of the highest success rates described with this surgery. He performed the procedure for a patient with advanced pterygium during his recent visit to Kolkata.
