Presenting with sudden onset pricking/stabbing pain on awakening early in the morning with redness and watering, recurrent corneal erosions are a common entity amongst the indian population. Insidious trauma to the eye preceding the onset of symptoms is a common etiology. Trauma to the corneal basement membrane can result in loose adhesion of the overlying epithelial surface. Erosion of this unstable surface can occur with rapid lid movement (especially during deep sleep). When identified, it can be easily treated with conservative medical management, bandage contact lenses(bcl), photo therapeutic keratectomy (ptk) or via corneal polishing using a diamond burr followed by bcl application.
